"Left Foot"

A good, repeatable golf swing begins with good set-up fundamentals. Some ingredients of a good set-up would be a grip that allows the player to return the club face to the ball squarely with speed, aim, body alignment, posture, ball position, and a good pre-shot routine to help achieve these things. All of these elements effect how you will swing the club and ultimately where the ball goes and how consistently it goes there. Most mistakes in a golf swing can be directly traced back to poor fundamentals before the ball is struck.

Let’s look at the left foot.

  • Probably the most important thing is that, at address, the left foot should be turned out to the left at about 10:30 or 11:00. This makes it much easier to turn through the ball on the downswing and to finish the swing. (David Duval has his flared out to about 10:00.)

  • The tip of your left shoe should be in line with the tip of your right shoe and they should be parallel to your target line. (Just because the left is flared out, doesn’t mean that it can’t be parallel.)

  • Your weight should be toward the balls of your feet but not on the balls of your feet. (Just nice and athletic.)

So remember, Flare the left foot out at about 10:30 or 11:00 as you address the ball and you are on your way to a nice complete and balanced finish.
